Cera Byrne started this petition to Niamh Smyth TD and

I’m a second year Health & Society student at DCU and I’m running a campaign to increase support and awareness in order to help improve the free mental health services in Monaghan.
In Ireland and Co. Monaghan especially there is a lack of free mental health services available to children, young people and adults. There is a huge demand for these services especially the affect the current lockdowns have on peoples mental health. It is evident that the supply is not meeting the demand. It is vital that services are free so that students, those that have lost their jobs and families on a low income can easily access them without facing a long waiting list or seeking private services that can be quite expensive. The organization Jigsaw which is a confidential support system provided to young people aged 12-25 is non existent in Monaghan and I would hope to see the introduction of it. Pieta House offers counseling and support to those that are suicidal and self harming. This is only available in Castleblayney, however, it is only providing support 16 hours a week which I believe is not enough. Camhs is currently accessible for children up until they are 18, it is based on the grounds of St. Davnets, Monaghan. Unfortunately, the waiting lists for an appointment after initial assessment for this service can range from 3 months to over a year. An expansion of these two services is essential.
I am going to propose this petition to Niamh Smyth TD. Niamh has already mentioned the need for Jigsaw in Cavan/Monaghan, but additional pressure from the public is needed to ensure it will happen in the very near future. I would hope that she will bring this to the attention of Minister for Mental Health Mary Butler in order to bring about the introduction and expansion of these essential services.
