Brighton and Hove Workers Party started this petition to Councillor Phélim Mac Cafferty (Leader of Brighton and Hove City Council) and

On the 21st of June, the Green-led council obediently revoked, from NHS staff, their right to park at work for free as mandated by the Tory government, though covid restrictions are set to continue till the 19th of July. If the government’s woeful response to the covid pandemic had taught us anything it is that Britain needs a real opposition. This is a role which Starmer’s Labour Party and the Green Party alike are absolutely ill-suited for.

The Green-led council has proven itself to be a pliant tool of the establishment and the austerity agenda. The new move is yet another burden on the overworked and underpaid NHS staff for whom we stood outside clapping in celebration of their valiant service during the covid pandemic.

The Brighton and Hove Workers Party demand that the scheme of free hospital parking for NHS workers be continued indefinitely. The Workers Party therefore urges you to sign the petition on change.org and get involved with the local branch to support our campaign.

GMB regional officer, Gary Palmer had this to say: “Low pay, long shifts, risking infection through poor PPE, along with an expected abysmal 1% pay offer would, I imagine, make it hard for any of our members or NHS staff to feel valued at all right now.

“But if you now add the removal of free parking to that, it leaves NHS staff with just a Government-issued Badge as a marker of just how little the Tories and now the City's Green Party really value all they have done for us.  Is that how the leader of Brighton Council and the City’s Green Party wants to be remembered?

“It’s strange as I know many of the City’s Green Councillors, including their leader Phélim MacCafferty, have clapped NHS workers, marched side by side with them, and even spoken at rallies in the city in support of GMB’s campaign to win a 15% pay rise for them.  Yet now it seems behind their backs they have gone about supporting the removal of a subsidy for free parking. Frankly, it’s shocking.”

All workers need a functional NHS therefore it is the duty of all workers to unite and stand with their brothers and sisters employed by the NHS in their struggle against the hypocritical Green-led council. After all, doctors, nurses, and all support staff are the people who hold our health service together and it is time we supported them in holding the Green Party to account for their empty words and treacherous deeds!
