Why this petition matters

Started by Leah Bishop

In September 2020 I was diagnosed with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), after approximately 11 years on the contraceptive pill.
Throughout that 11 years, despite my pill being changed, the process stayed the same. Every 6 months I would attend my GP surgery, be asked the same questions, and have my weight and blood pressure logged.
During my time on the pill, I had no signs to suggest I had PCOS, as the side effects of the pill masked any symptoms.
Now, nearly 2 years after stopping the pill, I am still coming to terms with having PCOS and understanding the symptoms, while also trying to conceive.

I feel that if the NHS carried out further testing when renewing a contraceptive pill prescriptions, conditions such as PCOS could be detected sooner, allowing women to understand and make the lifestyle changes to live with PCOS.

This is not to say that tests should be carried out every 6 months, but, for example, every 2 years. My diagnosis started with a blood test which then promoted further testing to confirm but of course not everyone would require further investigation, but it gives women the opportunity to have more control and understanding.
