Currently within health and medical care women aged 35 years or older are labelled as "geriatric mother" or "advanced". This term is hugely offensive and applies additional societal pressures that women must perform quickly to hit society milestones. This term is used based on just age, not lifestyle, whether its your first or third pregnancy, just age.

According to a report by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) the College specified that the optimal age for childbearing is 20 to 35.

Whilst it is accepted that the older a woman is the more risk there could be in pregnancy, this is not indicative of all women to a point that terminology is needed.

There are women who may have struggled to conceive, had miscarriages, medical issues such as PCOS or simply they haven't met anyone yet that may delay having a baby, that when they do get pregnant at 35+ that joy bubble is burst by being referred to in pregnancy notes or in person as a "geriatric mother"

Infact the over-35’s now have the fastest growing birthrates and the number of women having babies in their 40’s have nearly doubled in the last 10 years.

The terminology and language used in healthcare can really make a difference and should be reviewed.
