Key workers are some of the lowest paid and many are currently in insecure jobs. The coronavirus pandemic has exposed the plight of these workers. Without their support and the risks that they have taken working on the frontline, Britain would have been in a far dire situation in terms of the economy and the health and well-being of the nation.

The coronavirus has exposed how reliant we are on our key workers, and we believe they deserve much more than what they are currently paid.

Key workers include, but are not limited to: hospital staff, nurses, midwives, paramedics, pharmacy staff, social workers, care workers, and other frontline health and social care staff, support and teaching staff, workers delivering key frontline services and food delivery drivers.

The average salary of a key worker on Total Jobs as of 1 April 2020 is £19,000 nationally.

This petition is seeking to increase this average salary to a minimum of £28,000 plus London weighting for all key workers carrying out 7 hour shifts and overtime payment for anything beyond. This petition is also seeking to abolish zero-hour contracts.

This increase in salary for key workers could potentially be supported by increasing income tax for that purpose only.
