When I was 17, I was diagnosed with EUPD (emotionally unstable personality disorder, previously known as BPD). Anyone with this diagnosis will know the level of stigma faced by people with EUPD is incredibly high. We are seen as “attention seekers” “liars” “manipulative” and are very rarely trusted, it stops you from being allowed certain help and the diagnoses often leads to mental health professionals treating you differently to other patients. I was 17, a reckless teen who struggled with childhood trauma and I was fixed with a label that is pretty much impossible to get rid of by a psychiatrist who knew me for a week while I was in crisis. I now have a respected job in healthcare with vulnerable children and yet despite not accessing emergency services or having any sort of crisis for well over a year, I am stuck with this label which stops me accessing help for other issues I struggle with such as CBT for my anxiety. I was 17, I was a teenager and I most certainly was nothing like the woman I am today at 21. Research has shown that our personalities do not form fully until we are 25, I think by 25 most people have got an idea of who they are, most people have had the chance to stand on their own two feet and most of us have grasped an understanding of what we struggle with by this point. I believe psychiatrists should only be able to label under 25s with emerging EUPD and this should be reviewed at 25 and a decision as to whether this is EUPD or whether the person has worked through their problems or has another mental health diagnosis should be made. EUPD is massively over diagnosed in young females and it is often discovered that other disorders the person suffers with have been ignored or overseen by professionals due to the diagnosis of EUPD such as bipolar, C-PTSD and depression. The emerging diagnosis should not stop service users from accessing different therapies for symptoms and accessing help for potential EUPD too. I know so so many stories like mine and have seen the fight people have been forced to go through to get a diagnosis review and for their own thoughts and even other professional’s thoughts to be shot down and dismissed due to the all encompassing EUPD diagnosis.

Please help and sign this petition so that we can fight to stop EUPD being over diagnosed and fight for each individual to get the treatment and care they need and deserve.
