Emergency: Support our GP's job and save his Dumbarton practice

Angry patients have launched a petition to protest at the removal of Dr David Neilson from his practice at Dumbarton Health Centre. And to persuade NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde to scrap its plan to close the practice and put it out to bids from other General Practitioners in Dumbarton and Vale of Leven. The petition is being supported by Labour MSP Jackie Baillie and former Conservative councillor Euan Gear. Mr Gear, who lives at Mansewood in Dumbarton, is one of more than 2,000 patients of Dr Neilson, who lives in Cardross, Argyll and Bute, with his wife, Carolyn, and 14-year-old daughter. Mr Gear said: “I consider what is happening to Dr Neilson to be ridiculous and even possibly vindictive. It is quite unbelievable that the Health Board, through the Social Care partnership with West Dunbartonshire Council, want to go down this road. No good will come out of it and it is bound to lead only to the continuing dimunition of health services for patients in the Dumbarton area. Dr Neilson is an excellent doctor, who has been in post here for the past 12 years. I owe my life to the fact that he diagnosed and arranged treatment for a condition that could otherwise have been overlooked and ended my life. I have spoken with other patients about this and they are angry and upset. They have promised to write letters of protest to the Board. It is widely known that there is a shortage of GPs and that many of them complain frequently that they are overworked and underpaid. Patients complain too that it takes them an unacceptable length of time to get an appointment with their GP. GP out of hours services being provided at present at Vale of Leven Hospital are being cut and moved away to Paisley. How then can it possibly be helpful to terminate one doctor’s contract and spread out his work to other practices?"
