Having experienced bullying, harassment, victimisation, discrimination, unfair treatment and false allegations  at work myself I work as a National Advocate for a renown trade union whose primary focus is on reasonableness, equality and fairness and prosperity for all in the workplace. I have been hit by the wave of bias and botched  investigations. Albeit my lived experience, my greatest dismay had been the volume of sheer claims/ allegations made and the degree of lackadaisical manner these investigations have been handled. I have never assumed that this is a wide scale problem and has detrimental consequences like I understand it now.

In my work with various-big and small, private and government; employers and their staff in England I have come to learn that in most of these allegations, the person who complained and the one complained about are handled differently depending on WHO they are and WHAT they are. Some staff are treated with profound bias and punity  whilst others receive a slap on the wrist and a promotion for complaining or been complained on the same or similar issues. The workplace lacks justice.

For those truly on the wrong let’s ensure they learn and grow...the punishment must fit the crime equally in all fairness. I have no problem with issuing appropriate sanctions on those who the allegations are genuinely proven to be true. However sometimes the allegations are either made up, exaggerated and investigators are hand picked; mostly led by staff who already had issues with the alleged person or persons, or be given to someone who may be in a different directorate and or unknown to the complainant and respondent but can still be manipulated into coming out with the desired outcome of the favourable employee or the commissioner.

The number of false allegation or trivial issues exaggerated into serious allegations is growing exponentially. This is affecting the workplace, families, the community and society as a whole. Workplace allegations, relationship breakdown or poor relationships are an underlying determinant for; stress and stress-related absences in the workplace, stalemate, poor output, mental health related issues, high blood pressure, family breakdown, troubled homes, troubled families including children, poor behaviour of children in schools and communities and poverty. The bulk of the problem does not stop in the workplace because the rippling effect cascades to every branch of the individuals’ connection and networks.

Addressing unfairness in the workplace will definitely reduce: discrimination in the workplace, hate crime in our societies and promote tolerance, equality and respect for all. Personality issues must be addressed not ignored. More often than not our sleeping biases and prejudice takes over us and we transfer these to those closest to us. Considering we spend most time in the workplace than probably with our loved ones, it is only right that we make the workplace relationship positive for our sanity and service to society. 

Healthier and happier lives can start and end in the workplace!  Let’s start it not end it!
