Kimberly Pelletier started this petition to My School Board

The purpose of this petition is to ask that parents (2 spectators per player) be allowed to attend any home or away game for their minor child (rather than home games only, or for some schools neither home or away games). It also asks school boards to follow the CDC guidelines for quarantine (rather than 14+ days).

As a mother of 8, my husband and I have had 6 hockey players over the last 23+ years. Our 3 oldest children have already played High School hockey and graduated. We currently have 2 sons playing on the SCBH team and a daughter playing travel youth hockey. While we want to support our school and rally behind rules that are practical and offer significant safety benefits, the rules being petitioned fail both criteria.

First, watching my children play hockey is the light of my day but it is also necessary. Each of our 3 oldest children have had season ending injuries from a High School game. Two had concussions and one broken ankle in the skate…all requiring trips to the Emergency Room directly from the ice arena. Another son broke his collar bone from a midget hockey game and yet another was knocked unconscious from a hit throwing him headfirst into the boards. In the latter it was the parents, who also happened to be medical professionals, who raced to the ice to evaluate his condition while I watched from the other side of the glass. A school rule preventing parents from being physically present to make decisions regarding medical care for their minor children is unconscionable.

Second, with the mask requirements, social distancing between households, and onsite screening, the rinks have done an exceptional job creating a safe environment. To say that parents cannot attend a game says that these measures, despite being the standard protocol used everywhere and supported by the CDC are suddenly not good enough. There is no substantiated reason to further restrict the rules that are already in existence for youth hockey at these ice arenas.

I believe this rule has not been thoroughly thought through. It puts parents in a terrifying position of watching their child on Live Barn sustain an injury. Further, it robs them of the opportunity to make the necessary medical decisions in the moment, including when, where, and how to transport their child to an appropriate medical facility, or simply understand what is going on. Neither parent should ever be prevented from watching a minor child’s hockey game.

Further, School Boards should embrace the quarantine guidance prescribed by the CDC. Going beyond the CDC requirements is unnecessary and cruelly blocks players from additional games and practices (up to double or in some cases more).

Thank you for your consideration in adapting these rules.
