Why this petition matters

Objective: The NFL will formally commit (i.e., via a statement) to return the Super Bowl halftime show to family friendly content.

The halftime show of the 2020 Super Bowl has sparked considerable debate. Many viewers were shocked, disappointed, and angered by Shakira's and Jennifer Lopez's performances. A sampling of the phrases describing the halftime show includes "raunchy," "over-sexualized," "softcore porn," and "objectifying."

The outcry and this petition are not about the performers' talent, athleticism, or character--nor is it about their right to dance provocatively, wear minimal clothing, expose intimate body parts, perform on a stripper pole, etc. Ms. Lopez had every right to do those very things as part of her performance in a recent film, and adults have every right to chose to see the film; based on its R rating and the film's billing, they know what they will see and they may exercise the right to make this choice. By contrast, the Super Bowl halftime performance came into homes during prime time and during an event watched by families. As a result, there has been an outpouring by individuals who felt stunned, uncomfortable, embarrassed, concerned, and angry.  The Super Bowl is not an adults-only event, and the entertainment should and must reflect that fact.

NFL Executives: Do the right thing. Your new "Inspire Change" initiative, which touts education as a priority, was launched to create positive change in communities. This is indeed an opportunity to inspire change! Reflect on this error and make a public commitment to ensuring that future performances will be family friendly.
