Through this petition, we're urging Mr. Dan Snyder, the owner of the Washington Redskins, his team executives, and the NFL to follow through on rebranding the name of the Redskins.

The present name no longer garners support across our multi-cultural nation.

Now is the time for change !

On July 3rd, Mr. Snyder published a statement that he and team leadership will be accepting and taking into account input from the community.

We want the team ownership, leaders and partners like FedEx, Nike and PepsiCo and the NFL to have confidence that a name change will be OVERWHELMINGLY embraced by fans, season ticket holders and the sports loving community.  It will create enthusiasm, fill seats and boost ratings.

The leading proposal for several years has been to rebrand in honor of the legendary Tuskegee Airmen with the name "the Washington Redtails."  It's a great fit as it shines a positive light on valiant and brave American heroes.  An additional value is that the cursive R currently used in team insignia could equally apply as a shortened version of Redtails, with little change.

Another branding option could be "the Washington Buckskins."  While not discussed widely in the public conversation, this would serve to secure the nickname "the 'Skins," confirm the historic 'Skins-Cowboy rivalry and synch well with the Burgundy and Gold color palette. The portrait of the Native American in the logo could be retired in lieu of either a W, for Washington, or a mighty-looking buck (reminiscent of the elk/deer used by Hartford Insurance).

For either, the historic "Fight Song" could easily be adapted:

Hail to the Redtails (or Buckskins)!
Hail Victory!
March to the End Zone!
Fight for old D.C.!
Run or pass and score—We want a lot more!
Beat 'em, Swamp 'em,
Touchdown! -- Let the points soar!
Fight on, fight on 'Til you have won
Sons of Wash-ing-ton. Rah!, Rah!, Rah!
Hail to the Redtails!
Hail Victory!
March to the End Zone!
Fight for old D.C.!

Other creative options like "Washington Warriors" and "Washington Monuments" are being discussed and have pockets of support.

The point of this petition is to show that there are a wealth of great alternatives, all better than the outdated, present brand. (Consensus on the new brand can come later).

DC Mayor Bowser and FedEx have led the way.  Elected leaders like U.S. Senators Van Hollen and Cardin and Prince George's County Executive Alsobrooks have urged Mr. Snyder to get the process started and institute change speedily.

Where are our cultural leaders?

I want to humbly issue a friendly challenge, here, to highly visible members of our DC-area sports community if they have not yet expressed a view on Redskins rebranding.  Or if they have, we'd like to request they renew their stance, today.

So many of you are neighbors, people of conscience and extremely generous icons - Mr. Leonsis of Monumental Sports and Mr. Lerner of the Nats; reigning world champion Nats Ryan Zimmerman and Max Scherzer; brilliant Wizards John Wall and Bradley Beal; Caps magicians Alex Ovechkin and Braden Holtby; unstoppable Mystics giants Donna Delle Donne and Natasha Cloud; incandescent swimming Olympian Katie Ledecky; gymnast nonpareil Dominque Dawes; beloved P.G. county native and champion Kevin Durant, O's ironman and milk-drinker Cal Ripken, and many more who are too numerous to list.  Let's not forget dynamic former Pres. Obama and author Michelle who reside in DC, although technically they aren't athletes, per se.

To effect change, we need to ALL raise our voices on this topic.  Please join this petition; it only takes a moment.  Mr. Snyder will listen to you; and the community will benefit from your clear stance.

Thank you, so much !
