On January 13, almost a month before the Super Bowl, Maroon 5 posted a halftime show preview trailer on their twitter that included a few frames teasing Spongebob inclusion.

During the halftime show, after at least a month of teasing and raised expectations, all that the millions of fans received was a few seconds clip from the show. This movement was started not simply as a meme or a joke, but to honor Stephen Hillenburg, a man who influenced so many people in a greatly positive way. By teasing the fans with the probability that Sweet Victory would be performed - only to present a couple seconds from an episode of the show - is not just a slap in the face to the million+ people who signed the petition. It was a slap in the face to a movement meant to honor the memory of a legendary and widely beloved creator.
