I went to work yesterday and the weather was 93 degrees with not a cloud in sight, and sunny. I work at Nexteer Automotive in Saginaw, MI as an hourly employee, currently, and prior to me being there there has never been A/C during the summer months so on average the plant floor Is 10-20 degree hotter than outside. So as you can imagine it was topping near 103-113 in the plant as I worked, with nothing but fans that only relieve us of recycled hot air. Now for the 7 years I’ve been there I’ve dealt with this as a form of just “dealing with it” and “it’s been this way for years; since the plant opened”, all the while management has AC strung out all through the office area, for managers, engineers, IT, everyone that gets paid SALARY. Yes, even down to the lowest of the low of management; department supervisors. Department supervisors have home unit built into their office to have the ability to have a “comfortable work environment”. The question I have is why is just management allowed to have this right? Nexteer automotive is more than capable of providing this essential need to ALL employees throughout their facilities to have that comfortable work environment. There have a been more than 3 instances I know of in the last week where someone has had to stop working because of heat exhaustion due to temperatures inside the plants, and 2 more where my co workers felt as if they were going to fall out on the floor but didn’t want to say anything because they knew management wouldn’t do anything about it, in our contract it says Gatorade will be provided during the summer months, we have not received any Gatorade since the summer began. This company is not holding up their end of the bargain in providing for us the essential needs we need to stay healthy and safe during these blistering summer months. I am petitioning to have Nexteer automotive and ALL NORTH AMERICAN AUTO PLANTS be fully equipped with working A/C and heating units for the summer and winter months for ALL EMPLOYEES. Enough is enough, it’s not right that somebody who gets paid more than the Somebody else gets Deprived of a need. It’s only a matter of time before somebody dies due to a heat stroke because the company failed to take care of their biggest asset, their employees, on top of that since covid and because of the required face masks it’s harder to breath with the mask and the temperatures rising on the plant. I am asking you take these words to heart and understand the severity of this, this is minor change that would have ginormous effects for all involved. Thank you.
