Recently, some Newtown students have learned about our graduation that will take place on Zoom. We’re outraged by this decision because previously when our senior decision’s day was hosted on Google Meet, it can be seen as a fail alternative to celebrate the students, since people would interpret, say inappropriate things, and commit actions that were far from acceptable. For the seniors that actually care about these events, it was frustrating and low-spirited because after working so hard for four years, when our time had finally came, it was ruined and disturbed. We don’t want this to repeat and happen with our graduation because this event hold more sentimental values and memories for us to look back at in the future. The fact that Newtown’s seniors have been told that we won’t get caps and gowns takes out all the spirit and tradition of graduating. All we ask is to considered hosting a drive-in graduation, which is a graduation that incorporates social distancing as graduating seniors and their families are essentially walking down the aisle in their cars, and are being able to say goodbye to their friends and teachers from a respectable distance. Many states including the nearby states like Pennsylvania have already hosted drive-in graduation that were successful. We have reached the point of anger and frustration with this situation that we rather have no graduation and have our diploma mailed to our homes. For a school that’s supposed to tower above the rest, we aren’t living up to our motto and failing to do so by not listening to the voice of our student body. So, please take this idea of a drive in graduation into consideration. Thank you for your time.
