Newtown Soccer Alliance started this petition to Amy Mangold, Director Newtown CT Parks and Recreation and

For over 6 months the Newtown Soccer Alliance has been working with the Newtown High School Boys Soccer Program to develop a free 6 week training program for youth in our community from the ages of U5 to U12.

In doing so the goal has been to develop a program that would benefit our high school boys, and the youth in our community through a child-centered approach to youth soccer (in line with what US Soccer recommends).

Over 180 kids have registered for the free program but with just over one week left before the program is set to start... Newtown Parks and Rec has stepped in and told Newtown High School that they can NOT run the program because of their affiliation with the Newtown Soccer Alliance.

Traditionally Newtown High School has had control over their own fields for the fall season, and so the program was developed between the high school boys soccer program and the Newtown Soccer Alliance, with the High School Boys Staff designing and implementing the program.  Newtown Parks and Rec has stepped in saying they do not want the program to run because there is already a program in town and so they can not support a competing program.

Help us petition Newtown Parks and Rec letting them know that as a Newtown Tax Payer, you believe residents should have a choice and that...

#1 - This program should be given field access and allowed to run for the 6 week period.  The program is not in direct competition with the Newtown Soccer Club because it is not a club, it does not have a league, and it is only a development program for youth that happens once a week for 6 weeks.  Children are able to be a part of a Newtown Soccer Club league and join our development program as well.

#2 - They should require the Newtown Soccer Club to publicly release their bylaws and then adhere to the bylaws of having a membership driven vote for all board positions (Currently other board members vote in new board members, in direct violation of their bylaws according to a Parks and Rec board member who helped write the bylaws years ago.) A board that is voted in by other board members it not a community program, but rather a private program.  If the Newtown Soccer Club is a taxpayer funded program, that is a registered 501(c)(3), then the membership of the community (one vote for one parent of a child in the program) should be able to vote on board positions.

If the Newtown Soccer Club is to be the only allowed soccer program in town, then Newtown tax payers deserve for it to be run fairly and openly.

If you believe we should have the opportunity to run our development program and that you believe the Newtown Soccer Club should share their bylaws and operate by their bylaws, please sign our petition.

Thank you for your support!  :)
