Newspaper In Batesville,AR Does Not Recognize Same-Sex Partner In An Obituary

CT NOW! Same sex partner erased from deceased partner's obituary by Batesville paper

by Center for Artistic Revolution on Monday, June 20, 2011 at 5:22pm

A gentleman name of Terrance James contacted us here at CAR with this story.

His partner very recently passed away. Terrance was the only one there to make the decision to end the life support for his partner of 10 years.

He filled out the paperwork for the obituary that the Batesville Guard would print (this is the local paper that covered the McCancestory). When he read the published obituary it listed his partner's deceased parents and his siblings who had little contact and completely erased Terrance from the obituary.

He called the paper and spoke with the managing editor, Angelia Roberts regarding the obituary. He was informed that the paper does not print the name or recognize the surviving partners of unmarried couples in their free obituaries. Said it wasn't a "gay" thing, just their policy. Also cited Arkansas not recognizing same sex marriages.

However, she then went on to inform Mr. James that for a fee of $85.00 they would print an obituary that listed him as the surviving partner.

This man lost his partner, he is grief stricken and now has to deal with such homophobic behavior in his time of sorrow. The little comfort he might have had from the keepsake of that obituary is gone.

Please call and/or email Ms. Roberts and ask that the paper rescind this awful policy and publish Mr. Jame's in his partner's obituary. Let them know you are calling from CAR on behalf of Mr. James. Please use respectful, non-inflamatory language. Yes, we know they have been ugly, but folks stop listening when we start screaming and stooping to their level.

Letter to
President of HRC Joe Solmonese
Mr. Joe Solmonese:

My name is Ketina and I live in Little Rock,Arkansas. I just received an email from UUCLR(Unitarian Universalist Church of Little Rock) who received a message from CAR (Center For Artistic Revolution), a LGBTQI support group in Arkansas, who was contacted by Mr. Terrance James about the injustice he has received from Batesville newspaper. Angelia Roberts is the news editor of the Batesville Guard and she refused to include Mr.James in the obituary as the long-term partner of his significant other, who recently passed away.
Please help the LGBTQI Batesville Arkansas citizens fight against homophobia by signing this petition to get Batesville Guard to recognize Mr.James as the long-term partner of his loved one. Please pass this message on.

Thank you,

Ketina Thompson
