We must hold journalism which is racist and misleading accountable. Black lives are not clickbait or incite for debate.

The media constantly demonises black people. Whether it’s victim blaming, exaggerating events, or associating black people with negativity or trouble, black faces and stories often feature in articles which depict negative stereotypes.

After a suspected terrorist incident earlier today in Reading (20/06/20), Sky News tweeted “Police dealing with ‘serious incident’ after Black Lives Matter protest in Reading”. Later in the article, they clarify “A peaceful Black Lives Matter protest took place at the park earlier today. There is no suggestion that the incident is linked to any protests.”

We must hold Sky News accountable. We must hold journalists accountable.

We must call this what it is. Racism.

There is no need to discuss Black Lives Matter in accordance with a completely separate event which happened to fall under the same 24 hours as a peaceful fight against oppression. This is a clearly racist headline and it should not be allowed.

We are discussing our LIVES. This constant negativity in accordance with black people conditions others to distrust us, associate us with violence, and generally associate us with trouble.

Please, please sign this petition to fight against false and racist journalism.
