Helene LeBlanc started this petition to Newquay Town Council and

PLEASE HELP US TO STOP THE DEVELOPMENT PLANS ON THE NEWQUAY KILLACOURT.

As residents and visitors of Newquay we feel it is simply the wrong time for it. We are currently going through a global pandemic and the uncertainty of what the future holds is very real and present. The economic fallout from the lockdown will be vast and severe, especially for our seasonal community.

We know that investment and infrastructure is needed, evidenced by all the empty shops in town and the run-down feel, however the Killacourt is not it. The Killacourt with its historic sea views, should be used for peace; to escape the hustle and bustle of the high street.

The main point here is that we do not want to lose our town centre greenspace, voted by many as their favourite place in Newquay with something more suited to a urban environment like Milton Keynes.

Unfortunately, we know from experience, that the units will not be maintained to the highest standard, as nearly every other project has been abandoned by both Newquay Town Council and Cornwall Council in and around Newquay. It`s plain to see throughout the town, why make mistakes over and over? You only have to look at the public toilets, they cannot even maintain those. The end result if the development is allowed to go ahead, could be a poorly maintained site which becomes derelict; a brownfield site which may even get built on further for over-priced second homes, losing our space forever.

For the time being, the plans are going ahead because the planning has been rubber stamped. We feel it’s worth revisiting the plans following the Covid-19 crisis and ask serious questions about whether or not this is the right development or the right time for Newquay. It is sensible as a council and community to question whether spending just under a million pounds on 13 wooden cabins and ruining our best outdoor space in the town centre is the right thing to do at this time.

The Killacourt could use a little rejuvenation, we don’t deny that, and start up businesses do need a helping hand, but not to the detriment of our natural environment and at a time when the high street is dying. The very people that make up this town are being kicked in the guts when most haven’t been able to trade yet this summer season.

Please get yourself informed, look up the planning application on the Cornwall Council website and read about the plans of the development on the Newquay Town council Facebook page. Those plans changed enormously since the start of the application and still most of the community do not know anything about them.

We all want what is best for the town, let`s keep our green spaces green, stop pulling down our history and replacing it with ugly block development. Give Newquay its character back, we do not want to look like every other soulless town in Britain. We are better than that.
