Let’s face the truth, the Dress Code is unequal. Everyone who is reading this knows it. The Dress Code is unequal in a plethora of aspects, but the most prominent is sexism.

Girls are dress-coded far more than boys. Most of the time, girls are dress coded for “showing too much skin,” or having their clothes be “too tight.” However, boys can show their shoulders and their stomachs as well as wear tight shirts, and are they far less likely to be dress coded.

The Dress Code strictly prohibits (“sagging”) (source: NNPS Rights and Responsibilities Handbook, 2021-2022, Page 6) however, you can look around and see many boys who are “sagging”. But If you were to see a girl’s underwear that girl would be dress-coded in an instant. This then foreshadows the issue that you have with that many students who would be placed in ISS (In-School Suspension) and out of their in-class learning due to being dress coded.

We collected opinions from fellow students, and the main issues are: The dress code (or those who enforce it) favors boys and dress code girls more; The dress code (or those who enforce it) are biased towards students who have more mainstream “beauty” body types. Such as girls who may be “skinnier” or others who may be more “curvy”.

The results we collected are what we expected. Students alike recognize the issues with the dress code almost unanimously. This isn’t new. Issues with the dress code have been presented to school administration and/or the school board, yet no solution has been proposed or acted upon.

The issues listed in this essay are nowhere close to the plethora of issues other students are concerned with. We can make a change in our school, but we must have the drive and the power to do so.
