STOP SPENDING CUTS TO NEWPORT SCHOOLS
This petition had 77 supporters
We are opposed to the proposed spending cuts to Newport Schools and call on the Council to urgently reassess these proposals immediately. Only last month it was revealed Caerleon Comprehensive School had taken out a £1/2m bail-out loan in 2014, so to now propose deep spending cuts is shameful and irresponsible.
At the end of last year the UK Government agreed a new funding deal for Wales with the Welsh Government. For the first time there is a needs based factor and a long-term funding floor.
In financial terms Wales’ funding per person is at a level of around £120 for every £100 spent in England. It will fall to £115 against £100 in England over the coming decades.
Our Welsh Government (and Council in Newport) are responsible for financial decisions. They are in no position to blame the funding settlement from Westminster for the choices they make on spending decisions. Education is also bottom of the Pisa table and needs investment not cuts
