Jacob DiCarlo started this petition to Newmarket Operations Department

The Great Lakes are one of our only major sources of freshwater in Canada, and yet they are well-known to be polluted by all sorts of chemicals. One of the biggest contributors to this is road salt ending up in the lakes by going through the sewers, which is detrimental to the health of sea life, as well as possibly ending up in our drinking water.

This is something that can be solved, however it must be done one step at a time. The first step we can take on the small scale is to ensure that the Town of Newmarket is only using road salt when absolutely necessary. As it currently stands, their "first snow response is to salt the roads", which should not be the case if we want to diminish the amount of road salt used in order to weaken this damage to sea life and water quality. Of course, if it is very icy, salting is needed, however as it is now, salting is used the moment that snow gets above 6cm, regardless if there is a notable amount of ice on the roads or not.

This problem may not be something that can be fixed all at once, but if we don't take a first step, we will never reach a solution. Sea creatures are dying, our Great Lakes' water quality is diminishing, and you can help us take the first step to prevent it from getting any worse. We don't need to be using this much road salt, and you can help limit this excessive usage. Our first step to lightening Newmarket's ecological footprint is at hand, and it's about time that we take that step and prevent our lakes from being even further polluted!
