Newlands College Students started this petition to Newlands College Staff

On the 7th of November, at 9:10 am, Newlands College students were informed of a new rule.

Students may not leave during class time to use the bathroom or get a drink and instead must fulfil personal requirements during breaks.

For this ban, us students received no warning of it, nor did our parents. Already, this has been met with much outrage. Students believe that this violates their fundamental human rights. Additionally, some female students note that hygiene issues are sure to crop up.

Furthermore, some unnamed teachers also disagree and voice their disagreement by still allowing students to leave class for bathroom usage etc. Contrasting this, some teachers were strongly for and refused to allow students to leave, regardless of the reason.

Moreover, some students speculate that the reasoning behind the ban is due to vaping in bathrooms. However, this cannot be the sole reason, as vape detectors are being installed.

Peaceful protests are being planned, and these would be a good way for the school to understand the student's opinion.

This rule is discriminating and infringes and violates our fundamental human rights. I should be able to use the bathroom whenever I need to. Multiple students have voiced how they felt pressured and unable to use the bathroom even when needed to.

"I think that this rule is unfair, since when you gotta go, you gotta go. It's not like you can timetable your bathroom breaks" - A Year 10 Male said that I talked to.

I'm calling for the Newlands College Senior Leadership Team to reconsider this unfair ban, and revert these drastic changes made.

Sign this petition, put the link in your bio, share with all your friends so we can once again regain our right to use the bathroom!
