Newham council has let us down again. This time under Rokhsana Fiaz who like most politicians broken her promises and turned her back on the residents of Newham. 

Since coming into power Newham council has introduced new ways of generating money at the expense of the poor residents of Newham specially during the pandemic. What a way to show gratitude to her supporters. She has closed off browning road despite protests against it with the excuse of “pollution” thereby causing more traffic and pollution on Romford road and high street north. This sinister trick generates income for the council as people are tricked into stopping at yellow box junctions in the main roads which most of the time happens immediately after 2 lanes merge into one forcing a number of drivers to either stop in the yellow box or cause an accident. A lot of people with residential permits are allowed to use browning road but have been given multiple tickets. You may not have to pay for the tickets but to appeal against it takes hours as each ticket needs to be appealed separately. So some may end up paying an unfair fine. 

It doesn’t stop there. Newham wants to introduce a separate emission tax for residents which only residents have to pay. This is sheer extortion and daylight robbery. After this many new charges will slowly emerge which will become normal thus increasing the poverty of one of the poorest boroughs in the country. Is this what the people voted and hoped for?

The councils primary role is to serve their people and their best interest which residents are paying council tax for. If the council forgets its duty and responsibility towards its people and starts to work as an organised criminal enterprise where they extort money with fines and send their personal thugs “bailiffs” to those who refuse to pay and beyond then it’s time they step down with shame and let people who really care about their community lead the council in the right direction.

If you think this is all then you’re mistaken, she has U turned on too many of her pledges which is more than clear of her deception. She has unfrozen the council tax which gives her the power to raise the council tax at will. She has cut enforcement officer numbers resulting in higher crime and rubbish dumping. Theft burglary and knife crime has soared since she has taken power. Homelessness continues to rise despite it being her priority in her manifesto. Her promises to help the community during the pandemic has completely failed. Her promise of working with the community has not happened as her decisions have been made without community consultation. 

So this petition is a call for Rokhsana Fiaz to step down and resign and abolish her council.
