Zainab Daria started this petition to Newham Council

Newham Council will issue us with an Enforcement Notice to knock down the new porch of our family home and build it again. Please help me save my porch!

I have lived in my home in Newham for over 25 years and have raised two children and watched them grow into responsible adults always giving back to the community. Due to a recent surge of burglaries in the area we decided to add a porch for added security. Our porch fulfils the requirements of being a permitted development except the fact the height exceeds 3m (ours is 3.3m).

However, the Council sent us a notice of our porch “not meeting the context of the host building and the surrounding terraces”. Following this, we were shown by the contractor approximately 30 properties within a mile radius of our family home, all completed without planning permission and all with an identical porch design - two of which are directly opposite our house and were the first to have this porch style.

Following the initial notice, we applied for Retrospective Planning Permission which the Newham Council rejected. They will present us with an Enforcement Notice unless we make the following changes to the porch:

  • The canopy above the porch and bay window would need to be removed and the roof of the bay window restored
  • The porch would need to be independent (separate from) of the bay window
  • The porch would need to be reduced in size so it meets permitted development size requirement

In short, Newham Council want us to knock down our newly built porch and start from scratch, all of which would incur additional costs. We have spoken to many members of the local community who are appalled at the Council’s response. Please support me in saving our porch by signing this petition.
