Highway Traffic: Passing School Buses

As a concerned parent and community member, I am starting this Petition to call for stricter punishments for illegally passing school buses in our province.  It becoming all to common to see and hear people talking about seeing a vehicle passing a school bus while it is stopped.  Our current laws are proving to be ineffective. Some people are no where near alert enough when the lights on a school bus are flashing and the stop arm extended.

It is an offence under the Highway Traffic Act to pass a school bus that is receiving or discharging children, or has visual signals indicating that the bus is about to stop. The fine ranges from $500 - $1200 and the ticket comes with six demerit points.  Passing a school bus in Newfoundland should be on par with PEI.  Resulting in 12 demerit points and driver's licence suspension for three months, plus a $5,000 fine.  Our Highway Traffic Act should also be changed to allow bus drivers to stop on an angle as an extra preventative measure. Buses should be equipped with Dash cams to help catch passers.  There are so many changes that can be made to make this safer for our kids.

Our children are our future and we need to make change to help protect them. Help support by signing. Let our voices be heard.
