Implementation of Operation Angel- decriminalizing addiction & helping addicts

Addiction is a chronic, progressive illness of the brain that requires treatment. It is NOT a moral failing that deserves punishment. No addict wants to be addicted. They make a choice to take a drug in order to mask their pain. Opioid addiction is becoming an epidemic. How many more lives do we have to lose to this disease before someone steps in? With programs like Operation Angel, we can get these addicts the help they need free of charge. We can keep them out of the system & focus on saving their life. It doesn't cost the police department anything but a little bit of gas to implement the program. Chief Tim Lentz of Covington, Louisiana is very passionate about the program & can provide additional information. He works very closely with the New Orleans mission to treat the disease of addiction.
I lost my little brother to a heroin overdose on August 22nd, 2016. He was only 23. I loved an addict with all my heart so I know first hand how heroin destroys lives. You see a dirty junkie. I see a brother, a sister, a mom, a dad, a cousin, a friend, a beautiful person. Everybody is somebody's somebody. If I can change just one person's perspective on addiction, save one life- I will have done my job.
