As a result of Covid-19, all teaching has been redirected to remote learning (similar to that of the Open University). While it is acknowledged that this is for the safety of staff, students and the wider community, as students we were promised a "blended" teaching method that we do not feel has been implemented as it was promised. I'm sure that I can speak for all students when I say, that we expected a blend of both face-to-face and online learning, as the name suggests. As students, we do not feel we are getting our money worth.

The communication that Newcastle University have had with students regarding when or how this new form of teaching will take place, has been next to none. Further, the recent cyber-attack has undoubtable pushed back the plans for any form of teacher, yet there was also a lack of communication between the University and students regarding the nature of the attack, the impact of the attack, or the measures that were being put in place to resolve the issues created by the attack. A mixture of both of these issues, has left the students very frustrated!

Furthermore, this years tuition fees will cost the same as any other year. For home-students this will be £9,250 for the year. Usually, this tuition fee would allow us face-to-face teaching with academic members of staff; access to academic staff members office hours; and use of the shared facilities such as the Students Union, the Library rooms and study spaces. However, this year students are not experiencing the same quality and level of teaching.

The Open University, that offers a remote learning experience, charge an estimated £6,192 per year of an Honours degree, meaning the total for a 3 year Honours degree is £18,576. The reason they choose to charge this amount is due to their understanding that the remote learning experience is not the same as the face-to-face experience of going to a different institution. It seems that the experience of the 20-21 academic year at Newcastle University, will be more like the experience of attending The Open University.

It is for these reasons that as students we believe it only fair that Newcastle University reduce their tuition fees for this academic years to be more reflective of the experience of the students.
