To whom it may concern:
We, the parents of students at Newcastle Elementary/Charter School, hereby petition the Newcastle School Board regarding the following serious concerns regarding our school and the significant decline in quality of the education and community provided there:
1. Class sizes have increased significantly and deliberately, resulting in decreased individual attention to students, dilution of the community feeling long cultivated at our school, and inadequate support to teachers in their mission to educate each child at his or her individual level.
2. The Superintendent’s top-down approach in implementing changes (such as class size) has been done without substantive input from the teachers and parents who know the school best.
3. Teachers who have taken leadership roles in speaking up in support of our school have been inappropriately and summarily dismissed over minor infractions with no attempt to resolve these internally or privately – resulting in intimidation of our other teachers and a high number who are currently seeking employment elsewhere.
4. Despite its role as employer of the Superintendent, the Board has so far elected to take no action to correct any of the many concerns raised about the Superintendent’s behavior, even when such concerns were brought by a group of teachers last fall.
We request that the Board conscientiously look into the many questionable occurrences reported by our teachers. They have been the guardians of our school ethos, and they have repeatedly demonstrated their commitment to the school, students, and the community over many years at Newcastle Elementary/Charter School. Their alienation by a Superintendent who is not personally invested in our community is perhaps the greatest threat to Newcastle’s success. No school could thrive in this kind of adversarial environment; ours clearly cannot.
