Citizens for a Modern and Equitable Newark started this petition to Newark Parents & Community

Newark Unified School District (NUSD) has a history of mismanagement that has led to decreased enrollments and financial trouble. Parents have left the district in droves despite 2,500+ new residences being built in the community over the past six years. Enrollments dropped nearly in half to about 5,700 students currently. In an effort to bridge a $1 million operational deficient, the NUSD school board will vote on Thursday, November 19 to close two elementary schools.

The School Closure Advisory Committee (SCAC), which included 13 voting members representing schools, labor partners, and the community reviewed incomplete and incorrect data presented by a consultant. The board president Elisa Martinez and member Phuong Nguyen served as chair and vice chair. They refused to take committee concerns back to the board, and they pushed the committee into decisions with which they were not comfortable. Ms. Martinez could not properly conduct a vote during the final meeting, and yet four schools are now facing closure.

Graham, Musick, Snow and Lincoln are on the chopping block. Graham, Musick and Snow -- and also Schilling -- are Title 1 schools and receive additional funding  that may be lost if their school community is closed and shuffled into other elementary schools. We are asking the Board to consider our most at-risk students and ensure that they are not disproportionally affected by this decision.

OUR UNDERSERVED COMMUNITY SHOULD NOT PAY THE PRICE FOR THE BOARD'S POOR DECISIONS.

Sign on to tell the board to keep these school communities together and their Title 1 funding intact. Let's send a message to this board and tell them to honor the commitment they made to educational equity.
