     USA Day is gone.

USA Day has been one of the only times during the school year where we show our love for our home. The one time of year we can truly appreciate as a school our collective identity as Americans, and all of the freedoms and opportunities that being an American entails: freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom to peacefully assemble, social mobility and so much more. To live in this country is to be extremely fortunate.

However, we too have our share of problems. The growing influence of hate groups, the widening wealth gap, gun violence, gender and racial equality, etc. We are not going to pretend that America is perfect in every way, shape, and form. These issues do exist, and it would be lying not to mention them.

Here's a question though: why do we help our friends and family unconditionally? Because we love them. Solving big issues like these are tough, and requires a great deal of dedication and desire, and it's from the love of our country where we get that love from. Much like how we celebrate our friend's birthdays or buy gifts for mother's day, so too do we celebrate America to express and revamp that love.

We don't do much of that here at NA however. We rarely play the Star Spangled Banner, and we don't do the pledge of allegiance every morning. Now, the one day we celebrate America with is gone. There is nothing this school does that celebrates our country anymore aside from flying the colors.

It will be acknowledged that things have gotten controversial over USA Day in recent years, and it is understandable why the administration does not want to risk having another controversy this year, as the aforementioned issues usually become areas of conflict on this day.

When we celebrate USA Day, we are not celebrating racism or inequality. We are celebrating the things that our country stands for: freedom and opportunity. USA Day is our one time of the year at school where we can celebrate those ideals. Even if controversy does arise, it shows that each and every one of us cares about the issues of America. If we don't celebrate USA Day, those issues will be left ignored by us and swept under the rug. That's not how we solve them. We solve our problems by tackling them head on. The conflict that occurred on USA Day was merely the product of a common love for America.

USA Day is a day about love. A day about freedom. A day about unity. A day about our country, our home, and our identity.

Let's bring back our day.

Let's bring back USA Day!
