Caitlin Dargaville started this petition to New Zealand Parliament

Problem: Like physical health problems, mental health problems are very common. On one hand, they struggle with the symptoms and challenges that are a result from the illness, and on the other, they are challenged by the stigma and discrimination that results from the misconceptions about mental illness. As a result of both, people with mental illness are robbed of the opportunities that define a “quality” life: good jobs, safe housing, satisfactory health care, and affiliation with a diverse group of people. It is shown that around 47% of New Zealanders will experience some sort of mental illness In their lives; most will recover/ improve but what can sometimes hold them back from recovering is the stigma and/ or discrimination they can receive from family members, friends, work colleagues etc. – this discrimination is a part of the stigma surrounding mental health; they are discriminated by their peers which in turn leaves sufferers  afraid to look for help. The common issues faced include Difficulty in finding and keeping a job, isolation from friends, family and daily activities, Anxiety about health due to the overwhelming belief of not being listened to, low self-esteem from believing the stereotypes portrayed about mental ill-health” …etc.

My reason: My reasoning for wanting to start up this petition came from a high school assessment I was required to do for year 13 social studies. I studied mental health and its effects on New Zealanders. I was stunned to find out that even though almost half of our country experiences/ experienced some sort of mental health, mental health leave is still not considered as sick day leave. I am trying to bring attention to the importance of having a mental health day to re cooperate yourself so that you can return to work at 100% - or at least in a better position than you were before hand.
