It’s a tragedy that in New Zealand we have the highest rate of domestic violence in the developed world. Once every 5 and a half minutes the police attend a family violence incident. It is a depressing statistic that 14% of our young people report being hit or physically abused by an adult at home within the last 12 months and that 1 in 3 women experience physical or sexual violence from a partner in their lifetime. All of this reflects an alarming culture in New Zealand. The attitude of ignoring victims and their struggles is horrifically damaging to their lives and psyches. While all change is important in this issue, we believe that creating a society which supports the independence and recovery of victims will help us create a stronger and safer New Zealand.
We believe that supporting Jan Logie’s Domestic Violence Victims Protection Bill 2016 is crucial to the safe and prosperous recovery of domestic violence victims. This policy focuses on allowing victims a minimum of 10 days paid leave giving them time to recover while ensuring that their employment is secure. This allows the victims to have economic freedom and not have to rely on their abuser for financial stability.
