Tim Shadbolt is the longest serving mayor in New Zealand history, holding the office from 1983-1989 for Waitemata City and most famously for Invercargill (1993-1995, 1998 - present). That's almost 30 years holding a mayoralty position.
His name is synonymous with Southland and particularly Invercargill way before he was caught traveling around on a scooter back in November 2016.
Tim's open-arm personality towards New Zealand and the southern community has been evident with his frequent participation on comedy shows such as Jono and Ben as well as 7days, setting the 2012 Guinness World record for the longest interview at 26 consecutive hours, Oscar-worthy cameo in The World's Fastest Indian, and his tireless promotion of the locally-based Southern Institute of Technology promoting their zero fees scheme.
Tim's service and contagious smile and laughter make him a Kiwi icon and one of the most genuinely friendly faces in politics. If we are going to Knight rugby players and other sport stars alike, then why don't we make one of New Zealand's most loved public servants a Knight come the 2017 New Years Honours list?
