Watties Beanz started this petition to New Zealand Government

I understand the stigma of smoking, and agree with the movement to rid it from enclosed public areas. It is this kind of action that doesn't take our choice but also makes something addicting and unhealthy seem unappealing.

What I don't understand is the rise in prices of cigarettes each year with the purpose of making this country smoke free. Taking from our poorest households and taking advantage of those who are addicted. Taking away our choice and our ability to partake of something made readily available from the people who are now robbing us.

Currently a packet of cigarettes costs me $65. Anywhere else in the world this would be seen as criminal.

Smoking is dangerous? Where is the rise in prices on alcohol? It's nonexistent, that's because people who drink aren't some quiet minority who will submit. All the government is achieving through these price hikes is a rise in criminal behaviour and opening of a black market that wasn't necessary before.

Today they move ever closer to taking away our choice. You don't have to be a smoker to support this. You just have to be someone who believes New Zealanders should be free to make choices as they will. All I want, and hopefully what you want too are fairly priced cigarettes. I'm not a leper, a criminal or danger to society. I'm just a regular person who feels bullied and voiceless in a country where our forward thinking gave women a vote and decided to be nuclear free.
