I believe that a landlord or rental agent should supply some form of identification to a tenant when signing a rental agreement. When applying for a residential rental property, the tenant has to be willing to be credit checked, police checked and supply personal information regarding family and children. I have recently been caught out by trying to take my previous landlord to the Tenancy Tribunal only to discover that I don't have his legal name or the correct address for service. I believe that if private landlords were required to provide proper identification as part of the rental agreement, that a huge percentage would immediately be more compliant and it would provide the tenant with some protection.
