Amy Fey started this petition to New Zealand Government

Hi everyone, this is a petition that I have created in order to prevent further plastic pollution from entering our oceans. This is a petition calling on the New Zealand government to ban all single-use plastic items. New Zealand is famous for it's green and clean reputation however, taking a look at some statistics on ocean pollution, this is far from the truth. We are not alone in this, as this is an issue that should be addressed worldwide, but it isn't. Because of this, the oceans are subject to our waste and this severely affects valuable marine life nationwide and worldwide.

I'm sure we all love a good cup of coffee or a hot chocolate after a long shift at work, or even a plastic straw to drink our frozen coke with at Maccas, except what happens after we throw these out? Do they get recycled? Unfortunately, statistics suggest that this is not often the case. According to Greenpeace, who obtained their information from a report published by 'Science Advances' (researchers from the Universities of California, Georgia and the Woods Hole Institute in Massachusetts) which stated that approximately only 9% of plastic has been recycled. 12% has been incinerated (polluting the air with toxic gases) and the remaining 79% remains in the environment. This includes the ocean.

As of today, approximately 9 billion metric tonnes of plastic has been produced and spread worldwide. 8 million metric tonnes end up in our ocean along with the 150 million metric tonnes that already circulate the marine environment. That's a lot, isn't it? This affects over 700 hundred species in our oceans with many of them becoming entangled in the plastic or mistaking it as food.

This is the sad reality of what truly happens in our waters and I feel it is our role as New Zealanders to put pressure on the New Zealand Government to change our laws towards single-use plastic items and adopt more environmentally friendly ways to dispose of our plastic and reduce our nations' heavy reliance on it. A stricter ban on items such as single-use plastic bags, straws, disposable coffee cups, and plastic bottles would have a positive impact on our nation. This has the potential to influence other countries to do the same. Our small actions will have a big impact on the world.

If the current production trends continue, it is estimated that by 2050 there will be 12 billion tonnes of plastic in natural environments - which is the weight of 100 million blue whales (5000 times the actual blue whale population left on Earth).

It is up to us to create this change because before we know it, it will be too late. Our future and the future of generations that follow will be impacted because no one took action so I urge you to take this single action of signing this petition so we can take a step towards having a plastic-free future.
