This little bay on the east coast of Tiri Tiri Matangi Island (in Auckland's Hauraki Gulf) is named using an antiquated and racist term (NZGB Gazettal 1982 (76) p.2163). While Auckland Transport has changed the name of the bus stop "Chinamans hill" (https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/111637666/chinamans-hill-bus-stop-name-shows-normalised-racism-auckland-man-says this name still needs to be addressed.

Tiri is a wonderful place, and on my last visit to this bay, I was joined by some amazing fantails. So instead of Chinaman Bay, why not rename it Pīwakawaka bay? Or some other name that represents the beauty of the area.

Furthermore, Chinaman Flat and Chinaman Stream are also offical names of land features in New Zealand. These too should be addressed.

We are trying to fight to stop the normalisation of racism in New Zealand. Let's continue that by thinking about some of the terminology on our maps.
