NYU International Student in Financial Difficulty: Tell NYU to Allow Waive Their Balance NOW!

We, members of the Graduate Student Organizing Committee (GSOC-UAW Local 2110) and the GSOC International Students Caucus, condemn NYU’s blocking of an international graduate student facing financial difficulty from registering for courses. A worsening pandemic in their home country has rendered the student’s economic situation untenable , and as a result they have not been able to meet their tuition expenses at NYU. We call on the university to make financial exceptions given the student's extenuating circumstances.

The student joined NYU in 2019 and has successfully completed all requirements for their program as of Spring 2021. A colossal economic crisis in India  (the student's home country), resulting from an unprecedented second wave of the Coronavirus pandemic, has left the student and their family in dire financial straits. In addition to economic difficulties, the student's family members have also suffered from the coronavirus. The student is thus in the midst of both a financial and personal emergency,  and has therefore been unable to meet part of their exorbitant tuition expenses at NYU.  They are also two credits shy of completing their program at NYU, which they will need to register for during the 2021 Summer Term. Registration for this term closes on July 7th. In spite of the student's stellar academic record at NYU and continued commitment to meeting all program requirements, NYU refused to allow the student to register for the last two credits they need in order to graduate until they come under pressure due to this petition. NYU has also imposed (and continues to impose) additional charges on the student as a penalty for not being able to meet the university's high tuition.

NYU prides itself on being “home to the highest number of international students in the United States.” This distinction comes with a responsibility to the international students the university serves, many of whom have been disproportionately impacted by a global pandemic that continues to ravage vulnerable communities across the world. Yet, in this case as in others, the university has failed to prioritize the needs and education of the student. On the contrary, the university’s actions thus far—penalizing the student by charging additional fees without regard to their unavoidable financial circumstances—suggest that NYU is far more interested in its profit margins than in the education and well-being of its vast international community.

The university’s actions are putting the student at risk of losing everything they have worked to secure, jeopardizing their status in the United States and an expensive international education. We call on NYU to fulfill the following demands:

  • NYU must immediately waive all finance fees and other charges that have been made to further penalize the student who is already facing extreme financial precarity.
  • NYU must waive the student’s outstanding balance. At the very least, the university must significantly reduce it and negotiate a feasible payment plan.

GSOC members have begun a mutual aid fund for the student to help them pay their outstanding balance. You may contribute to that here.

Join us in calling on NYU to immediately allow the student to register, and to waive all outstanding balances!
