On the night of Dec. 27, 2015, NYU student Christian Gutierrez and a group of other teens went to Ka'ena Point Natural Area Reserve where they killed at least 15 protected Layson Albatrosses and crushed over a dozen eggs.

They shot the docile birds with pellet guns, beat them with a bat, and hacked off their feet with a machete.  They removed the feet to collect their ID bands as souvenirs and posted photos of the mutilated birds on social media. They also stole bird monitoring cameras, solar panels, and a sound system.

As a consequence, there is over $200,000 in damages and lifetimes of unforeseen environmental damage to a population of 300 birds that mate for life and lay one egg a year.

Christian Gutierrez, the oldest of the group, was an 18 year old student at NYU at the time. As of Jul. 6, 2017, he faces 45 days of jail time of the one year possible. His felony theft and 15 original counts of animal cruelty should not be overlooked by New York University.

We believe the above mentioned violates NYU's Codes of Conduct and his mental health jeopardizes the health and safety of the University community. We are demanding the expulsion of Christian Gutierrez immediately.
