The New York City Foster Care system is outrageous. I am 17 years old and I am currently in the foster care system. I have constantly requested for specific Medical Services that I am in need of, I am constantly throwing away into the streets and my ACS worker does nothing to help me and is quite condescending, and I have been requesting family visits and extracurricular activities in which I have entitlement to and I have yet to receive any of these. The neglect and abuse is overlooked and ACS needs an entire Reformation. I only get until age 21 to have a college degree money and a stable job yet I have not gotten any sorts of financial assistance nor job assistance. This is exactly why the homeless rankings of New York is so high and is gradually increasing and with the global pandemic that erupted so suddenly in 2019 has made much more barriers to everyone and specifically foster youth. I petitioned that ACS has an entire Reformation and new rules and set standards. The privileges that kids get with whenever they live with parents is what we deserve as well we are still human. We need more time to reside in group homes, more job placement assistance, more federal grants and money to help us, and the equal entitlement that other kids are allowed to have. We should be top priority for housing. There should also be more job openings for young adults and adolescents as well as more paid internships. We should have a stipend or a Federal Grant for discharge for whenever we get an apartment. $3,000 is nowhere near enough to buy furniture and pay a bill as well as buying food. We should have top priority for permanent Section 8 and qualify for free Medicaid especially if we are low income. We were already thrown out into the world basically alone with no mother and father figure to take care of us we are being taken care of by strangers we deserve much more than we are getting. ACS workers and group homes need proper training for at least 6 months as well as a more rigorous background check and should also be supervised by a supervisor whenever they are working until they have deemed themselves responsible to care for the kids and adolescents. And we should have the authority to press charges as well. There is such a high percentage of children and adolescents who have been abused in the foster care system and are already suffering from mental illnesses and whenever a report is made nothing is done it is just left on file we deserve justice. I believe ACS workers should receive a minimum of a state or federally certified certification or even possibly an associate's degree that way they could gain insight upon the mind of a child and an adolescent so they know how to properly handle these sort of things.
