Reject Governor Cuomo's proposal of Merit Pay for Public School Teachers

As public school teachers in the State of New York, we categorically reject Governor Andrew Cuomo’s proposal to give merit pay to teachers rated “Highly Effective” on the State’s flawed teacher evaluation system.
In no district where it has been introduced has merit pay improved teacher quality or student performance. We oppose merit pay not only because it fosters an environment wrought with competition in schools instead of fostering a creative, collaborative atmosphere where success for ALL students is paramount, but because it will increase the emphasis on testing in schools already filled with stress. It will discriminate against teachers who work with English Language Learners and Special Education Students with IEPs/504 Plans, as well as those with students who live in poverty, and may lead to an exodus of experienced teachers from high needs districts.
As professionals dedicated to serving all our students, and to reduce the stranglehold of standardized testing on the schools of New York State, we will not only protest the imposition of merit pay, but we will refuse to accept any merit increment in principle based on the junk science teacher evaluations used by the State.
