My daughter is dyslexic and her and all children with dyslexia deserve an appropriate literacy education.

My daughter has been diagnosed as a person with a specific learning disability in reading and writing; essentially a multiple defect dyslexic. However, the school district is not required to provide her with a structured literacy program to remediate her defecits, forcing me to seek help outside of school and robbing her of FAPE. We need change now!

The dyslexic students are the canaries in the coal mine. Every school should require that teachers understand and follow evidence-backed reading instruction: explicit, systematic, diagnostic and prescriptive instruction based on the five pillars of instruction (phonemic and phonological and phonemic awareness; alphabetic principles and decoding; fluency; vocabulary; and comprehension) and opportunities to gain background knowledge.

I am signing because I am the parent of a Dyslexic child. My daughter has suffered educational neglect that has also manifested as emotional neglect due to failing to provide her with a scientifically proven diagnostic, prescriptive, explicit, and sequential reading program shown to remediate Dyslexics. Alabama has more educational accountability when it comes to reading then the “Empire State”.

I am signing because my child has dyslexia and was not recognized by her school until the tenth grade. Now she is getting the right support and her reading improved 90 percent in just 5 months! Teachers should be well educated to be tuned in to their students' needs.

We need to stop the misery of illiteracy, New York is way behind - other states have had literacy laws for years and are way ahead.
