Help Make Great Lake Ontario a National Marine Sanctuary
For the first time in nearly 20 years the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has opened up the application process to add new National Marine Sanctuaries to the 14 already established regions in the world. This unique opportunity has prompted four Lake Ontario counties (Jefferson, Oswego, Cayuga and Wayne) and the City of Oswego to apply for status for the southeastern Lake Ontario region.
The unique beauty of the southeastern Lake Ontario region, and its wealth of maritime heritage resources offer a fascinating story of people, cargo, and missions undertaken over hundreds of years of North American history.
Lake Ontario history connects directly to a rich cultural history ashore in the form of heritage landscapes, trade and battle routes, historic architecture, and engineering resources of recognized significance such as the Historic Fort Ontario State Historic Site, the Revolutionary Trail, Pulaski Village Historic District, Sacket’s Harbor, the 1871 Sodus Bay Lighthouse, and the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor.
The Great Lake Ontario proposed Sanctuary embodies historic and cultural significance which could benefit from federal protection. Hundreds of years of well preserved war ships, commerce ships, aircraft, and artifacts unique to our region can be preserved and protected for future generations.
Designation as an NMS would:
- Greatly enhance education opportunities and provide the needed
impetus and momentum to involve not only local school districts, but also institutions of higher
education in the region
- Supplement and significantly enhance recreational activities in this region, attracting many more travelers and improving the quality of life for residents.
- Boost the regional economy and promote Central New York's tourism efforts while preserving and protecting the region's most unique historical natural resources

My signature below certifies that I am a resident of/visitor to the Central New York region that would ultimately benefit from the southeastern quadrant of Lake Ontario being designated as a National Marine Sanctuary. I understand that this proposal is based on the wealth of historic resources that lie within the waters here and believe that it is important that we take proactive measures to protect that part of our Nation's history.
