Scajaquada Jack started this petition to New York State Department of Transportation and

In the early 1960s, construction began on what would become NYS Route 198 more commonly known as the Scajaquada Expressway. In the 1950s, the Niagara Thruway, I-190, was built. The Thruway was paid for through bonds that we to be backed by the tolls collected including the now removed toll booths at the foot of Breckenridge Ave. For the Thruway to be considered a toll road, the Federal Highway Administration stated a toll escape must be provided for motorists before they reached the toll booths. This decision is why the 198 was created.

NYS Route 33 is a state route which is the only state highway which serves a direct connection from Buffalo to Rochester. The highway building of the 1950s and early 1960s would see multiple neighborhoods claimed, including Humboldt Parkway which was the largest parkway in the entire system in the city of Buffalo. Imagine ripping out Bidwell or Lincoln Parkway today, that is what happened to Humboldt Parkway in the 1950s. What were once tree lined streets which promote the vibrancy of neighborhoods were replaced with a life sucking canyon centered around moving motorists in and out of the city.

The Scajaquada Expressway and Kensington Expressway destroyed a world-renowned park system with their construction. In addition, the Kensington destroyed multiple neighborhoods with its construction. We have a once in a lifetime opportunity to fix the mistakes of the 1950s and 1960s. According to the Congress on New Urbanism, both of these expressways are highways without a future. Our world is shifting away from the usage of the automobile. Buffalo can become a leader in the urban highway removal movement.  We must remove the 198 and the 33 now!
