Naomi Yu started this petition to New York State Department of Environmental Conservation

We are a group of high school students from Jericho High State and we are determined to spread awareness about the methane emissions from the decomposition of waste in landfills. According to the American Geoscience Institute, landfills produce roughly 20% of total methane emissions each year. Excessive amounts of methane in the environment can lead to respiratory illnesses and insect-borne diseases. Moreover, the rapid increase of greenhouse gases in the environment can cause increased frequency in severe weather patterns such as droughts, hurricanes, and heatwaves. We urge you to speak with your local legislators to propose new ways in which your community can reduce the damage caused by landfills. As most waste in landfills is organic, we encourage you to compost food scraps, cardboard, and other biodegradable items. Our group aims to partner with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation to discuss ways in which our region can help reduce methane emissions. Please help us raise awareness against the landfill gases before their negative effects on the environment become irreversible.
