We petition the NYS DEC to include mountain bike specific trails in their Unit Management Plan for the Vernooy Kill State Forest (Lundy estate). Mountain bike specific trails connect terrain features for the best rider experience and most end up being loop trails as a result. The hiking trails and multi-use trail proposed in the draft unit management plan do not offer this opportunity.

The trails on the Lundy Estate offer the user a more unique backwoods experience than any other place in Ulster County; it is the place where the Catskills meet the Shawangunks.  It is the kind of terrain that riders would like to ride in. Loop trails will provide the benefit of riding within this forest and not straight through it.

New mountain bike trails located in the Vernooy Kill State Forest would complement the mountain bike park trails in Lippman Park, which have generated many additional tourist visits in recent years and which have helped boost the local economy.

We urge the NYS DEC to work with the mountain bike community to develop plans for mountain bike trails that are challenging, fun and safe to use while meeting all DEC requirements for avoiding damage to the environment and native species.

We petition also for a permanent mountain bike trail between Lippman Park and the Vernooy Kill State Forest.
