Dear Assemblyman Lentol,
I am writing to you today regarding S5690B/A2880B, a bill to protect for-hire drivers by making it a felony to assault a for-hire driver when they are on duty. The bill just passed the State Senate and is currently under consideration by the Committee on Codes.
Taxi and for-hire vehicles are a crucial part of our transportation infrastructure, yet these drivers are not treated the same as those who work on the bus or subway. Driving is a taxi is a very dangerous job, and I support changing the law to protect those working to keep our city moving.
In addition, drivers tend to be immigrants and minorities, and they are often targeted because of this.
We hope that you will follow the lead of the Senate and pass this legislation to protect the drivers of taxi and for-hire vehicles.
