New York: Let Israelis Drive!
New York has a special relationship with Israel.
Hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers have immigrated to Israel, and hundreds of thousands of Israelis have immigrated to New York.
But when an Israeli moves to New York, they have to go through a long process to get a New York Drivers license.
I am a 31-year-old Israeli, and a licensed driver for more than a decade. Earlier this year I moved to New York with my husband. But when I tried to transfer my Israeli drivers license, the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles told me that they have no reciprocity agreement with Israel. This means that I have to study the entire drivers manual, pass a written test, take a 5-hour pre-licensing course, and pass a road test. I am extremely busy, and this is an unnecessary burden.
Someone from North Dakota or Canada can move to New York and they will be given a New York drivers license without any of these hassles. Given our special relationship, why not Israel?
I am calling on Cesar Augusto Perales, the Secretary of State of New York, to work with the Government of Israel to honor our special relationship, and establish a reciprocity agreement between New York and Israel.
