Our Ability Alliance requests New York State budget support Employment First

In 2016, Our Ability Alliance formed the New York Business Leadership Network with the support of six businesses. Because of the Employment First initiative, what was not sustainable in the past has grown fivefold.
Today, we are 30 businesses strong. Our members support employment of individuals with disabilities inside their businesses and with their vendors. We are looking to continue to grow our business network.
Our Ability Alliance began this in response to the recommendations in the Employment First commission report. We respectfully request financial support of $500,000 in the next budget. This will allow OAA/NYBLN to grow from 1.5 employees to four employees, as well as expand our successful pilot employment program.
We will be able to travel across the state and work directly with other business leaders to increase from 30 members to over 120 businesses. This will translate to thousands more jobs for New Yorkers with disabilities. In six months alone, Our Ability piloted a new program and added 50+ individuals with developmental disabilities to their workforce. We look to bring that successful program to 120 plus businesses in 2018 and beyond. If each of our 120 businesses hire only a third of what we piloted in 2017 – we can see 2400 people more employed - annually! That is 2400 more tax paying citizens in New York.
Our Ability Alliance/NYBLN believes in increasing opportunities for people with disabilities in all aspects of society. We understand employment is the first step in achieving one's goals in life. We are excited to be working on such important project moving forward.
