Using the restroom is a vital and important part of every high school student’s day. NYC High schools typically only focus on having restrooms for male and female students.  Many students take for granted how lucky they are to have these restrooms made specifically for them. These restrooms allow a place for students to comfortably use it, wash their hands, and leave. However, for some students it is a bigger deal because of unfortunate circumstances. Transgender (Trans) and non-binary students usually associate using public restrooms with negative encounters. Trans people are individuals whose sense of personal identity and gender does not correspond with their birth sex, and non-binary people are individuals who do not conform to the stereotypical two gender norm. These negative situations cause them to avoid using restrooms completely. According to research, “Harassment or the fear of harassment has been proven to keep gender-nonconforming people out of public bathrooms.” It's important that NYC high schools begin to educate their students on these restrooms and why they're necessary.
